Economics of Biobanking: Business or Public Good? Literature Review, Structural and Thematic Analysis

This paper reviewed the relevant scientific literature on business and economics of biobanking to explore key themes paradigms. The structural properties were investigated, such as authors, journals, studies, well co-citation co-authorship networks; study revealed that research is a niche area within vast literature. concentrated in relatively small number institutions, countries, which rather surprising given substantial public investment concerns about biobank sustainability. analysis also suggested major noted shifts focus specific themes. commercialisation samples more acknowledged than before but under condition equitable sharing benefits across various stakeholders. Most biobanks are heavily subsidised by sector considered goods enterprises. OK, underutilisation specimens low rates cost recovery suggest current mainstream operating model hardly sustainable. With many maturing, long-term sustainability became topic discussion trends.
